Diamond friction coating
Diamond-profile friction coatings provide extremely high and long-lasting grip in holding tools such as lathe jaws, chucks, and robotic grippers. With documented high friction, diamond coatings are a superior choice for secure clamping and industrial precision.
Secure grip in demanding industrial applications
Diamond-profile friction coatings are developed for applications where maximum and reliable grip is critical. Using our advanced electrochemical coating technology, we build up diamond-hard friction surfaces that significantly outperform traditional methods such as groove grinding or blasting.
The result is friction surfaces with very high, stable, and long-lasting friction, even under high loads and in environments where oil or lubricants are present.
New technology that increases friction
Diamantprofil has further developed its extensive experience in diamond tools to include high-performance friction surfaces for holding tools. Through electroplated diamond, a surface structure is created that:
- Provides coefficients of friction close to or exceeding μ = 1.0
- Maintains friction even on oily surfaces
- Does not exhibit stick-slip behavior
- Has minimal impact on geometry and tolerances
The diamond-coated surface does not deform (depending on the surface and substrate) and therefore does not lose grip over time, providing consistent and predictable performance.
Verified friction – tested by RISE IVF
RISE IVF in Mölndal has conducted extensive friction measurements of Diamantprofil’s friction coatings. Tests were performed under high loads and against various materials, primarily steels of varying hardness.
The results clearly show that diamond-coated surfaces are superior compared to grooved or blasted surfaces:
- Diamond coating (D76): μ ≈ 0.96
- Grooved surface: μ ≈ 0.36
- Blasted surface: μ ≈ 0.21
After repeated tests and controlled sliding (~2 mm), no significant deterioration in either friction or the surface layer could be observed.
Applications – where increased friction makes a difference
Diamantprofil’s friction coatings can be applied to both standard and custom components, for example:
- Lathe chucks, jaws, and collets
For more secure clamping and the ability to use higher cutting parameters - Robot fingers and grippers
For reliable handling without slipping - Lifting devices and fixtures
For safe lifting and secure fastening - Friction welding and measurement fixtures
For repeatability and precision - Custom holding surfaces
The possibilities are essentially limited only by the application
Advantages of diamond-based friction surfaces
- Very high and consistent friction
- Withstands high clamping forces
- Secure clamping during machine setup
- Lower required clamping force results in rounder parts
- High friction even in oily environments
- Long service life → high cost efficiency
- Can be recoated – a cost- and environmentally efficient choice
- Can be applied to existing standard tools
A reliable choice for industrial precision
Diamantprofil’s friction coatings combine Swedish quality, proven performance, and long service life. For applications where grip must not fail, there are simply few alternatives that can match diamond.
