If the metal body is still in sufficiently good condition, it can often be recoated and reused.

During recoating, the old coating is removed and the tool body is given a new layer of diamond or CBN grit. This can be particularly beneficial for custom-made designs where the existing geometry still meets the production requirements.

The deciding factor is therefore not only how worn the abrasive surface is. The condition and dimensions of the tool body, as well as any potential damage, also need to be assessed.

What does it mean to recoat a grinding tool?

Electroplated grinding tools have a metal body with diamond or CBN particles bonded to the active surface. During use, the coating gradually wears down.

Once the abrasive grains are worn out, the old coating can be removed. The tool body is then prepared for a new active surface.

Recoating should therefore not be confused with grinding or sharpening a cutting tool. In this case, it is the electroplated coating that is renewed, while the existing tool body is reused.

Read more about the design in the guide what is an electroplated grinding tool?.

Which types of grinding tools can be recoated?

Recoating is primarily relevant for electroplated diamond and CBN products where the metal body can be reused.

For example, this may include:

grinding wheels

profiled custom designs

rotary grinding tools

custom geometries

other electroplated products where the tool body still meets the requirements

A worn abrasive coating alone is therefore not sufficient grounds for recoating. The tool body must still be suitable for the intended application.

Diamantprofil offers recoating of diamond and CBN tools and can assess whether an existing tool body can be reused.

The condition of the tool body is crucial.

The metal tool body forms the foundation for the new coating. It therefore needs to retain the correct shape, dimensions, and properties for the intended operation.

If the tool body has become deformed or damaged in a way that affects its geometry, recoating may not be suitable. The same applies if other damage has occurred that means the tool’s function can no longer be ensured.

For profiled designs, the geometry is particularly important. If the underlying shape has changed, applying a new layer of abrasive grit will not solve the problem.

Each tool body therefore needs to be assessed based on its actual condition.

How can you tell when the active surface is worn out?

Wear can appear in different ways depending on the application and process.

One indication may be that the grinding process no longer performs as it did before. Material removal may decrease, or the result may change even though the other conditions remain unchanged. Surfaces that could previously be machined with consistent results may begin to require different settings or longer processing times.

However, this does not automatically mean that the coating is worn out. Changes in machine settings, workpiece material, or other process parameters can also affect the result.

If performance changes, both the active surface and the rest of the process should therefore be checked before determining the cause.

When is recoating a good solution?

Recoating can be particularly worthwhile when the tool body itself represents significant value.

This applies, for example, to a custom design manufactured according to a specific drawing. If the shape and dimensions are still correct, it may be worth investigating whether the same tool body can be reused instead of manufacturing a new one.

It can also be relevant when an existing design already performs well in production. If the specification is known and the grinding process has delivered the desired result, there is an established basis to work from.

Can a damaged tool body be reused?

It depends on the type of damage and whether the tool body still meets the requirements of the application.

Normal wear of the coating is one thing. Deformation or damage to the metal tool body itself is another. If the dimensions, shape, or function have been affected, this needs to be assessed before a new coating can be considered.

It is therefore not possible to give a general answer based solely on the age of the product or how long it has been in operation.

A worn tool may be a candidate for recoating. A damaged tool must first be inspected.

Does the same grit size need to be used again?

Not necessarily. If the previous specification has worked well, it is a natural starting point, but recoating can also be an opportunity to discuss whether anything in the process needs to be changed.

Grit size affects, among other things, the balance between material removal and surface finish. Any change, however, should be based on the workpiece material, geometry, and other process conditions.

If you would like to learn more about the relationship, see the guide which grit size should you choose for grinding?.

Can you switch between diamond and CBN?

Diamant och CBN används för olika typer av arbetsmaterial. Ett byte av slipmedel bör därför ses som en förändring av specifikationen, inte som ett rutinmässigt steg vid ombeläggning.

Diamond is used, among other applications, for carbide and technical ceramics. CBN is often a more suitable option for hardened ferrous materials.

If the workpiece material or application has changed, there may therefore be reason to review the previous specification.

Read more in CBN or diamond – which tool should you choose?.

Recoating or manufacturing a new tool?

Reusing the tool body is not always the best solution. In some situations, manufacturing a new tool is more appropriate.

For example, this may be the case if:

the tool body is damaged or deformed

the geometry is no longer correct

the design needs to be changed

the application has changed

a different design is better suited to the production process

However, if the tool body is in good condition and the specification is still relevant, recoating may be an option.

The assessment therefore involves more than simply determining that the abrasive grains have worn down.

Why is recoating particularly relevant for custom-made products?

A custom-made tool body may be designed for a very specific workpiece or operation. For example, its shape may follow a profile that is to be transferred to the workpiece.

When the active coating wears down, this does not necessarily mean that the geometry has lost its function.

If the dimensions and shape are still correct, the tool body may therefore be worth reusing. That part of the product does not need to be manufactured again solely because the abrasive surface is worn out.

Diamantprofil works with electroplated diamond and CBN tools for industrial applications, including custom-made designs.

What needs to be checked before recoating?

An assessment is easier if information is available about both the product and how it has been used.

Relevant information may include:

the workpiece material being machined

whether the existing coating consists of diamond or CBN

the previous specification, if known

drawings or dimensions

information about how the tool has been used

any changes observed in the grinding process

whether the tool body has any visible damage or irregularities

If the solution has worked well in the past, that is also valuable information. It provides a proven reference point for the assessment.

Can recoating affect the quality of the final result?

The purpose is to provide a usable tool body with a new active coating. The underlying geometry must therefore still be suitable.

At the same time, the grinding result is influenced by more factors than the coating alone. The abrasive grit, workpiece material, machine, contact area, and process settings all need to work together.

If problems have occurred in production, the cause should therefore be investigated before assuming that a new coating alone will resolve them.

How to proceed with a worn grinding wheel or other tool

If the active surface is worn out but the tool body still appears to be in good condition, you do not necessarily need to assume that the entire product should be discarded.

Gather the available information about the tool design and let Diamantprofil assess the conditions. It can then be determined whether recoating is suitable or whether a new tool body should be manufactured.

The next step is to understand what actually happens when the old coating is removed and a new one is applied. Read more about how diamond and CBN tools are recoated.

If you already have a product that needs to be assessed, you can contact Diamantprofil.

Frequently asked questions about recoating grinding tools

When can a grinding tool be recoated?

An electroplated diamond or CBN tool may be suitable for recoating when the active surface is worn out but the metal tool body is still in suitable condition. This needs to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Does the coating need to be completely worn out?

Not necessarily. If the grinding result has changed or clear signs of wear can be observed, it may be advisable to inspect the product before the problems become more significant.

Can all electroplated products be recoated?

Not automatically. Whether recoating is possible depends, among other things, on the condition, geometry, and design of the tool body.

Can a deformed tool body be reused?

Deformation can affect both geometry and function. The tool body therefore needs to be inspected before it can be determined whether reuse is appropriate.

Can the grit be changed during recoating?

It may be possible to change the specification, but any change should be based on the application and the desired result. A specification that has worked well previously is often a good starting point.

What is the difference between grinding and recoating?

Grinding involves machining a surface using an abrasive. In recoating, the old active coating is instead removed from an electroplated tool body and replaced with a new one.

När den aktiva ytan på ett elektropläterat diamant- eller CBN-verktyg är utsliten behöver hela produkten inte alltid ersättas.
